British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several access tunnels providing entry to the depot... early reports are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their bravery," he added. "They were part of numerous British personnel deployed over the holidays. This operation, to remove militants who pose a risk to our security, highlights how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
