European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
