The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Fed typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the number of employment gains added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of positions created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Show Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was set to publish September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication when the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
