Sam Fender has given the full amount of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize cash to the MVT, which operates to preserve the Britain's independent concert spaces.

Fender was awarded the cheque on 16 October as his new release his work was declared the top album of the previous year.

He has chosen to hand the money over to the Music Venues Trust, in acknowledgment of the essential function local spots fulfilled in his early career.

"I personally would not have achieved what I am doing today if it hadn't been for all the performances I did around the area, and beyond, when I was beginning," stated Fender. "These locations are legendary, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, more than 150 of these venues have ceased operations – about one-sixth of the entire UK sector.

Recently, top acts like Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the MVT in its attempts to help venues survive, by including a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which supports independent venues.

Fender also participated, generating more than £100,000 on his recent tour to help 38 grassroots venues across Britain.

These funds supported spaces that were facing potential shutdown due to difficulties arising from flooding, fire incidents and personal losses, as well as regulatory hurdles, legal disputes and noise complaints.

Additional spaces received funding support in improving amenities and sound and lighting systems that positively impacted performers and concertgoers.

"The concept that money from performances in large arenas helps the local stages, where it kicks off for artists like me, is just logical," the star has commented.

He is among several artists to give his honor prize money to charitable organizations.

When they received the prize in the year 1996 for their release the album, frontman Jarvis Cocker stated that the band would contribute their winnings to the charity the charity.

During 2002, artist Ms Dynamite split her award among a few good causes, including the children's charity and a Sickle Cell charity.

"I also gave a thousand pounds to my local community centre, to their gymnastics program, because I trained in gymnastics when I was growing up and they required better apparatus," Ms Dynamite explained to the media.

Two years ago, they contributed their winnings to the community center that developed their band, as well as other local music groups.

Also 1994 winners M People contributed their winnings to a multiple sclerosis charity after a close contact was identified with the disease.

"Receiving the award was sufficient," said singer the singer. "The prize was the cherry on top but we could do without the cherry, because we had the main prize. So our victory impacted the lives of others."

Recently, the Music Venues Trust revealed it had protected two grassroots venues in the South East, by bringing them into community ownership.

The first in that area and the second in that location were acquired under the community ownership initiative, which is supported by Arts Council England and supporters who acquire "shares" in the venues.
