Approximately fifty cars have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.

Automobiles, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they stated in a statement.

Police report they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.

The liquid had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they added.

Officers then discovered many other marked automobiles and residential walls in the surrounding area.

Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws outlawing the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.

Law enforcement state preliminary tests show the fluid was probably blood from a person.

"There is still no lead as to its origin; officials are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the incident," they stated.

Local authorities stated they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the public for details.

An important representative stated the vandalism made him speechless and needed to be resolved promptly.

"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the right-wing violent incident five years ago," he stated on social media, mentioning the killing of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at individuals of immigrant origin in 2020.
